The Board of Directors of AHEPPP: Family Engagement in Higher Education encourages our members to consider applying to the Board. 

Role Summary

The mission of AHEPPP is to support professionals in higher education who promote student success through informed parent and family engagement. As elected officials for the organization, the Board of Directors provide leadership and strategic governance to the organization in support of its membership. The role of the Board of Directors centers on the fundamental responsibilities of providing the organization with sound governance, fiduciary and strategic oversight and direction, and representation across institutional type/size and geographic regions.

The board is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the mission of the organization is carried out and understanding its collective purpose
  • Selecting, supporting, and evaluating the performance of the executive director
  • Strategic and organizational planning
  • Ensuring strong fiduciary oversight and financial management
  • Professional and resource development
  • Supporting the organization's programs and services
  • Enhancing the organization's public image
  • Ensuring legal and ethical integrity

Responsibilities of Directors

Each individual board member is expected to: 

  • Participate in monthly virtual board meetings, as well as two in-person board meetings annually
  • Attend and represent AHEPPP at events, work groups, and national conferences
  • Recruit AHEPPP members and solicit their involvement in the organization
  • Contribute to the establishment of annual goals of the organization
  • Participate fully in committees or task forces as requested
  • Understand the organization's mission, policies, programs, and needs as well as its collective purpose
  • Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization
  • Participate in the organization's annual evaluation process and planning activities
  • Engage in learning opportunities to better understand the communities served by parent and family programming
  • Commit to one three-year term (with the option to renew)
  • Keep abreast of current events in higher education as they pertain to students and their family engagement at the college level

There are two ways to be nominated for the Board of Directors:

  • Self: Any current AHEPPP member willing to participate and to fulfill the obligations of board membership may apply by completing the nomination form and returning the information by September 29. 2023 (now closed).
  • Peer: Any current AHEPPP member who feels a particular individual will enhance the quality of leadership on the board may nominate that person.  Please complete and submit the peer nomination form by September 15, 2023 (now closed). A board member will reach out to nominees.

Application Criteria

Minimum Criteria:

  • Membership in AHEPPP of no less than 2 years
  • Professional experience in higher education for no less than 5 years
  • Evidence of a commitment to the field of higher education, including parent/family relations, retention, engagement, transition, student affairs, enrollment management, fundraising, or other related areas of focus
  • Institutional support to participate in two in-person board meetings each year
  • Willingness to embrace a fast-paced, high pressure, team-oriented work environment with a amicable attitude and ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Commitment to AHEPPP's mission, values, and programs

Desired Criteria:

  • Experience with leadership and engagement within AHEPPP programs (e.g., Mentor Program, conference volunteer and/or presenter, committee membership, AHEPPP Insights Blog contributor)
  • Contributions to the field of family engagement through presentations, publications, and workshops within and outside of AHEPPP
  • Evidence of commitment to learning and growth
  • Demonstrated creativity through the development of programming, events, and services at your institution, community or in another professional organization
  • Active participation in advancing equity, inclusion, and belonging goals, either at your institution or within AHEPPP

We are seeking two-four new members on the AHEPPP Board of Directors. All members are encouraged to consider applying or nominating for this role.

All applications must be submitted by September 29, 2023 for consideration for the 2024-26 term. Applications are now closed.

Selection Timeline & Important Dates

Nominees will be vetted by the current Board of Directors and will be presented to AHEPPP membership for a vote. 

August 31 - September 29 | Call for Applications

September 5 | Board of Directors Information Session over Zoom; 3:00 p.m. EST

September 11 | Board of Directors Information Session over Zoom; 12:00 p.m. EST

September 15 | Peer nomination deadline (closed)

October 2-6  | Current Board and Executive Director verifies applicants' eligibility 

October 9-23 | Voting by AHEPPP Membership

October 27 | Election Results Announced

November 6 - 8 |  Family Engagement in Higher Education National Conference

January 1 | Term officially begins
