President's Perspective

The end of the academic year is upon us! When I was reflecting upon my year the other day, I was feeling like I didn’t accomplish very much. I was being hard on myself, thinking that I didn’t have many excuses this year being that we were a couple of years out of the heart of the pandemic. Then it hit me…move-in 2021 was THIS ACADEMIC YEAR. This IS the year that we said would be harder than the last because of more unknowns. How is it that August 2021 feels like last month, but also like it was ten years ago?

I had to remind myself that this year, survival was the accomplishment and now we have a fresh start ahead of us! The way I see it, we in higher ed get two chances each year for a fresh start 1) January, when the world is celebrating new beginnings with the new year; 2) June-August, when we wrap up the old academic year and prepare for the next. If January is the time for personal renewal, summer is the time for professional renewal and reflection.

I don’t know about all of you, but I’m excited to be back in a space where there is more known than unknown (knock on wood) and I can begin planning again. I can reimagine events and actually bring families back to campus. I get to see all of you in Orlando in November. While I want to remember the lessons learned these past two years, I’m ready to move ahead and start anew.

In my annual reports and reviews this year, I’m going to try to remember where we were in fall 2021 when this year started and be easier on myself than usual, and I hope you all give yourselves that same grace. I encourage you to think not just about what you accomplished, but how you survived the year. Did canceling an event give you the energy to manage incoming parent calls? Did you build new relationships on campus that made your job easier? Did you drop something so you could help another department? Those are all successes that you should be proud of!

I also encourage you to think ahead to fresh beginnings: what campus events can return, or return in a more “normal” manner? Dig back to 2019—what was something you were planning to try in 2020 that was canceled? What needs refreshing? This is the year to reimagine things anew, not just the way they’ve always been.

Happy summer, my friends! I’m looking forward to seeing you all in upcoming Discussion Zone calls and on the Online Community!
