2023 Family Engagement in Higher Education Awards

It is time to start applying for and nominating your colleagues and your students for the 2023 Family Engagement in Higher Education Awards! 

Every day you and your colleagues around the globe advocate for parents, families, and students through top-notch communication, research, activities and programs, and important initiatives that foster student success through family engagement. The Family Engagement in Higher Education National Conference provides our association with the opportunity to showcase some of your amazing work and recognize promising practices in the profession. This year, make sure your institution is among those being honored. It takes just a short time to apply, but the recognition is long lasting. Self-nominations are welcome and encouraged! All nominations must be submitted by Friday, June 2 June 9, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. ET for consideration.

AHEPPP has recently spent time reviewing and reimagining the awards program to  better focus on the organization’s values. Awards now represent two major  categories.

AHEPPP Outstanding Professionals Awards

Winners will be recognized at the 2023 Family Engagement in Higher Education National Conference in Baltimore, MD. 

AHEPPP Programs, Initiatives, and Research of Distinction Awards 

Winners will be announced prior to the 2023 Family Engagement in Higher Education National Conference. Winners will have the opportunity to share information about their initiative outside of the conference. 

Excellence in Innovation AwardInnovative programs or initiatives
Something Borrowed, Something New Award - Borrowed idea, implemented well (nominate yourself and the person/institution you borrowed it from)
Powerful Partnerships Award - Collaborations 
Creative Communication Award - Innovative communication strategies or deliverables

Outstanding Professional: Magnificent Mentor  

This award recognizes a professional in higher education who has excelled at mentoring and advising others within the profession, resulting in improved professional development and growth. Mentorship can come in many forms. Magnificent Mentors could be involved in an organized mentorship program, such as the AHEPPP Mentor Program, or they could have developed natural mentorship relationships within AHEPPP or their institution. Through this award, we hope to give recognition to the importance of mentorship within  the AHEPPP community and to our profession, and acknowledge mentors who exemplify the following AHEPPP core values:

  • Supporting a collaborative environment
  • Responsible and ethical behavior
  • Equity, belonging, and inclusion
  • Ongoing learning/growth

Award nominators and winners do not have to officially be part of a parent and family program at their institution; they can come from any office, department, or program from an AHEPPP member institution that engages with parents and families of college students. 

To nominate a Magnificent Mentor, complete the online application form and provide at least one letter of nomination. 

The nomination letter must:

  1. Provide a thorough description and examples of the nominee’s style of mentorship and impact on their mentee, campus/program, AHEPPP community, and/or the higher education profession
  2. Demonstrate how the nominee exemplifies each of the following AHEPPP values through mentorship:

    4. Ongoing learning/growth

Outstanding Professional: Friends of Family

The AHEPPP Friends of Family Award is an opportunity to recognize professionals outside of the traditional Parent and Family Program model who support families in some way. Through this award, we hope to give recognition to Higher Education professionals who work with parents and families of college students from offices other than traditional parent and family programs through the following AHEPPP core values:

  • Leading innovation and ideas for the profession
  • Research, assessment, and/or best practices
  • Supporting a collaborative environment
  • Responsible and ethical behavior
  • Equity, belonging, and inclusion
  • Ongoing learning/growth

Please note that all core values do not have to be met to submit for this award. Scoring is based on the quality of nominations and those that demonstrate more core values (with high quality), have the potential for higher scores.

Award nominators should be part of a parent and family program and a member of AHEPPP. Award nominees do not have to officially be part of a parent and family program at their institution; they can come from any office, department, or program. 

To nominate a Friends of Family, complete the online application form and provide at least one letter of nomination. 

The nomination letter must:

  1. Provide a thorough description and examples of the nominee’s service within the AHEPPP community and and/or the higher education profession

Outstanding Professional: Exceptional Service

This award recognizes AHEPPP volunteers who have demonstrated exceptional service to the AHEPPP community as a conference volunteer, presenter, discussion facilitator and/or community content contributor. Through this award, we hope to give recognition to the importance of service and collaboration within the AHEPPP community and to our profession, and acknowledge volunteers who exemplify the following AHEPPP core values:

  • Supporting a collaborative environment
  • Responsible and ethical behavior
  • Equity, belonging, and inclusion
  • Ongoing learning/growth
Award nominators do not have to officially be part of a parent and family program at their institution; they can come from any office, department, or program from an AHEPPP member institution. Award nominees must be a contributing member to AHEPPP through volunteering.  

To nominate a member for Exceptional Service, complete the online application form and provide at least one letter of nomination. 

The nomination letter must:

  1. Provide a thorough description and examples of the nominee’s examples of service and impact on the AHEPPP community

The AHEPPP Founders’ Award of Excellence is an opportunity to recognize a professional in the field of parent and family programs who has left their mark on the profession.Through this award, we hope to give recognition to a leader who exemplifies all the following core values of AHEPPP through their commitment to our community and profession.

The AHEPPP Excellence in Innovation Award is an opportunity to recognize someone who has instituted innovative programs or initiatives on their campus and/or in the AHEPPP community. This award recognizes an institution of higher education and its professional(s) in the field of parent and family programs who have developed and implemented an innovative and creative initiative, resulting in improved activities, services and/or communication for/with parents and families of undergraduate students. Examples of these initiatives could include orientation formats, use of technology, population specific programming, etc. and using the following AHEPPP core values:

  • Supporting a collaborative environment
  • Responsible and ethical behavior
  • Leading innovation and ideas for the profession
  • Research, assessment, and best practices
  • Equity, belonging, and inclusion

Award nominators do not have to officially be part of a parent and family program at their institution; they can come from any office, department, or program from an AHEPPP member institution nominating a program/initiative/research from an AHEPPP member.

This award recognizes not only the institution who has implemented a successful program based on a borrowed idea, but also the institution from which the program was borrowed. This award will be reviewed using the following AHEPPP core values:

The AHEPPP Outstanding Contributions to Research and/or Literature award recognizes a professional in the field of parent and family programs who has had an impact on the body of knowledge about, and practices of, engaging parents and families in an institution of higher learning, and whose achievements have advanced the profession.

The recipient should have published articles, survey analyses, and/or books/book chapters. The work should address parent engagement at the post-secondary education level as it relates to/impacts student development and/or retention using the following AHEPPP core values:
  • Supporting a collaborative environment
  • Responsible and ethical behavior
  • Leading innovation and ideas for the profession
  • Research, assessment, and/or best practices
  • Equity, belonging, and inclusion

Award nominators do not have to officially be part of a parent and family program at their institution; they can come from any office, department, or program from an AHEPPP member institution nominating a program/initiative/research implemented by an AHEPPP member .
