Hello All!

We have chosen to have our Parent and Family Weekend during the spring
semester at the University of Dallas this academic year.  This will be my
first time coordinating and planning this event, and nothing was passed on
to me from the person who did this previously….so I am basically starting
from scratch.  I am interested to hear from those of you who have had
successful parent and family weekends -
what kinds of activities were involved?
did you have guest speakers?
were parents and families charged to attend?
did you have a parent and family dinner (if so, did you pass on the
cost to the families, was it on or off campus)?
was there an excursion to a local tourist attraction (i.e. – a
museum, or ballpark, etc)
did you give out a souvenir?
did you take reservations (if so, how did you handle those who just
showed up)?

weekend a success.

Greetings!

We are looking at restructuring our summer registration program AND
our fall welcome weekend (a huge, but exciting project!) and I am
wondering how much you charge students for your “orientation fee” and
what that fee covers. In addition, do you have a fee for
“family/parent orientation” and what does that fee cover?

Good morning everyone,
Here at Stockton College in New Jersey we are looking at starting a
membership fee for our Parent and Family Association.  If you charge a fee
at your institution would you be able to answer the following please:

1.        How much is your fee and for what duration does that cover
(semester, yearly, etc.?)
2.       Does the fee cover the entire family or just one person?
3.       Who is eligible for membership?
a.       Must members have a currently enrolled student?
b.       Do they need to be fully matriculated?
c.       If they must have a currently enrolled student, how
would you deny membership to someone who does not have a
student enrolled due to FERPA?
4.       What benefits does your membership offer (i.e. discounts,
programs, etc.)?
5.       What do you spend the membership fee on?
6.       If able can you please share a copy of your membership
application?

Greetings Everyone,
At the beginning of summer, a few emails went around the AHEPP listserv
about campuses that were experiencing reduced participation in Parent &
Family Orientation.

At the University at Buffalo, we’ve experienced a drop in parent/family
attendance at orientation (especially with transfer orientation) & are in
the process of exploring possible reasons/way to increase attendance.
Possible reasons/guesses on our part for reduced parent/family
participation are:
1.      We now offer transfer students the option of an online
orientation (Last summer 171 transfer students did the online
orientation.)
2.      We replaced printed orientation confirmations sent to
transfer students by postal mail with email confirmations.
3.      The economy (both transfers & first-years)

If any other campuses have also experienced a decline in parent/family
participation at first-year and/or transfer orientation, I would really
appreciate your thoughts.

I am curious if you invite parents to your convocation?
We are exploring that option but we have a multi-day move-in process
that makes it a bit challenging at this point.
I want to see if parents are invited to stay for this event and if they
have any sort of role?

could you share the books you have read thus far?

If not, does anyone have a suggestion of a book they would recommend to a
parent/family book club?

Fiction, self-help, or any great reads you can think of would be
appreciated!

Hello Colleagues,

My department the New Student Family Services unit is looking overall as to
how we can better improve our support  the Hispanic population in regards
to programs and resources. As you all probably know this student population
is growing fast in higher education.

I was wondering if any of your departments or you, have done any special
research or preparation through Admissions, Family Day or weekends,
orientation programs for the Hispanic population, i.e. website or
materials, interpreters, etc. I would really like to hear from
predominantly white institutions.
